Let's Not Compare Thee to A Summer's Day

The other day, I saw a quote that really resonated with me:

"Comparison is the thief of joy."

It hit me like whoa. Of course I've heard similar things before, but for some reason this particular wording really hit me. Comparison is the thief of joy. Just let that sink in.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

That's crazy. Because it's true! At least in my experience it is.

I'll be the first to admit that I get jealous of people. What they have. What they look like. What they're doing. Where they're working. Their perfect life. Okay, no one's life is perfect. I'm very aware of this, but can we just take a moment and admit that some people's lives are closer to it than others?

Now that that's out of the way.

I'm going to blame a lot of this comparison on social media. I spend quite a bit of time online.

It's crazy when I realize that I've been on my computer for hours with no specific task to complete. I feel better about it when I get online to look at jobs or do a little online shopping or to look something up (yes, I still actually get on my computer to look stuff up occasionally!).

I want to know what people are up to. Where they're working, who they're dating, what they're doing tonight. But on the other hand, I don't want to know anything.

It can be absolutely depressing to see how happy other people are all the time and how awesome their lives appear. That sounds insane, but it's true. I'm perfectly fine with my life until I peek on Facebook and see that everyone else's lives are just a little bit better, a little fuller, a little richer.

I heard somewhere that you can't compare your entire life to everyone else's highlight reel.

SO. FRIGGIN. TRUE.

People don't post bad things on Facebook. They don't wake up in the morning and post about how awful their makeup from the night before looks or how horrible their morning breath is.

No. They just don't do it. And when people do post negative things, there is ALWAYS a reason behind it. They want people to show them support or sympathy, or they want them to make them feel like the sun shines out their ass, "Oh you could never do anything wrong!" "It's not your fault!" "You are a beautiful person inside and out."

Puh-lease. I see right through it. Everything is posted with a purpose.

There are SOME people that I do want to see every day. I want to know what they're doing. I've thought about going on a purge, and leaving only about 10 people on my Facebook, but that seems like bad business sense for some endeavors I may want to pursue in the future. So maybe I'll just unfollow...

I just need to remember that not everything actually is the way it appears online. I have no idea what it's really like, but it's just hard to keep it in perspective sometimes.

Until I figure it all out, I'll just keep trying to remember that. So do whatever makes you happy. In the end, that's all you really can (and should) do.

Obsessed & not Afraid to Admit It!

Okay. Maybe I'm a little afraid. Or maybe I just cringe a little bit when I think about it. But hey. It's true!

I have realized that I tend to do things in spurts. I become mildly (or not so mildly) obsessed with something and just DO THAT THING. All the time. I wish I was obsessed with running and eating vegetables!

So here's a little list of things I'm currently into.

If I Stay
I've been watching this movie almost every night! It's so sad but I love it! I want to get the book so I can read that too! And I really love the music in this movie! I'm not ashamed to admit that I buy soundtracks to movies that have awesome songs in them.

I feel like that would be such an awesome job. Choosing the music for movies?! Come on. A few other soundtracks I think are good:
  • Divergent & Insurgent
  • August Rush
  • Pitch Perfect & Pitch Perfect 2
  • 50 Shades of Grey (have not, will not see the movie, but Earned It, Love Me Like You Do, and Crazy in Love are awesome!)
  • Now & Then
  • Grey's Anatomy
  • One Tree Hill
  • The Hunger Games (all)
  • Juno
  • Mean Girls
  • Remember the Titans
  • Uptown Girls
Some of these are kind of old, but still good!

Mat Kearney
Ever since April, when Macy and I went to see - and meet AND get our picture taken with!! - Parachute, I've been slowly discovering the headlining act's music more and more. Mat Kearney was headlined the tour, so I bought his new album before the concert, Just Kids, which is pretty fantastic, by the way, and I listened to the crap out if it!

I had a few songs of his on my iPod from years ago. You should remember "Nothing Left to Lose." I hope you do anyways! It was super big a few (5ish?! omg just looked this up and it was released in 2006! So try NINE) years ago. Holy crap. Way to make myself feel old!

Anyways. You should check out Just Kids. My favorite songs from the album are "One Black Sheep," "Heartbreak Dreamer," "Just Kids," "Miss You," and "Shasta." Other songs by him:

*I used "Shasta" and "Runaway" in two of my videos!

I got to meet and take a picture with my favorite band. That is the definition of awesome!

My new camera!
Obviously. And It's a few months old, so is it still new? I already want another new one! Working my way up (and saving up) to the 5D Mark III!

I'm also trying to come up with more fun little projects to do. Actually, I just got done brainstorming one! It's for an application, but still counts, right?!

Reading
I've recently finished:
  • The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan (good)
  • Paper Towns by John Green (kind of hated this)
  • The Secret of Ella and Micha by Jessica Sorensen (Not so good)
  • Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver (pretty good!)
  • Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling ( COMPLETELY AWESOME!)

I always said that when I got out of school, I would read more. And I definitely have been!

Smoothies
Love smoothies. Hate cleaning the blender!

Hailey Devine
One of the few blogs & Instagram accounts I check religiously. She's a videographer in Utah, and she's done some really cool stuff!

Putting in job applications
Not because I want to, but because I have to!

Writing
Been doing a lot of it lately. Not for any particular reason.

Law and Order: SVU
To be fair, this is kind of a constant obsession. But I'm still upset that Amaro won't be coming back! He's been one of my favorite replacements!

"Colors" by Halsey
This song has been on repeat like whoa! Hoping that when I spring for her whole album it's just as great!

That's all for now!
